Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Dorothy J. Weintz was a granddaughter of Asa S. Mercer, Seattle pioneer. Asa S. Mercer, in addition to being a pioneer in Seattle, was president of, and an instructor at, the University of Washington during its first term in 1863. He left the Washington Territory and moved to Wyoming Territory, serving as Wyoming's alternative comissioner at the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection consists of materials collected by and research notes of Dorothy J. Weintz concerning her grandfather, Asa Shinn Mercer (1839-1917).

Included in the Weintz papers is correspondence pertaining to Asa Mercer, notes and drafts for Dorothy Weintz's projected biography of her grandfather, a collection of writings about Mercer by other authors, and an extensive series of clippings.

The more significant part of the collection, however, is the Asa S. Mercer subgroup, which includes Mercer's correspondence (1863-1917), most of which concerns his varied career in Wyoming after leaving Washington State; a selection of his writings, some in manuscript form; and a copy of the classbook kept by Mercer in his dual role as president of and instructor in the University of Washington during its first term. A file documents Mercer's activity representing Wyoming as the state's alternate commissioner at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.

Major correspondents include Clarence Bagley.
