Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Kearns Mansion, located at 602 East South Temple, was designed by architect Carl M. Neuhausen and built during the years 1900-1902. It was to be the home of Thomas Kearns who made his fortune in the Silver King Mine in Park City, Utah. After the death of Thomas Kearns in 1918, his widow, Jennie, continued to live in the house until 1937. That year it was presented to the state of Utah to be used as the governor's residence. In 1957, the state built a new residence for the governor and the Mansion became home for the Utah State Historical Society. In 1977, partly because of interest in the preservation of significant historic structures, the legislature determined the Kearns Mansion should once again was used as the governor's residence.
