Dr. Latham was born in 1845, graduated from medical school in 1884 and in 1890 was appointed Agency Physician on the Colville Reservation, taking up residence in Nespelem. A gifted amateur photographer, Latham took hundreds of photographs of the Indians around him, the ordinary tribesmen as well as such outstanding figures as Chief Moses of the Columbias and Chief Joseph.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Photographs of Native Americans, largely Nez Perce Indians on the Colville Indian Reservation in Nespelem, Washington, circa 1900-1912.

Latham appears to have sold or given his negatives to Lawrence Lindsley, who incorporated them into his own negative bank and registered them in a group in his records as numbers 4769-4975. This group of negatives (5x7 and 4x5) was acquired along with the Lindsley donation. An additional group of 11x14 sepia-toned Latham images, mounted on museum board, along with corresponding copy negatives were received from the Idaho State Historical Society in 1990. (These were given Latham numbers 1-63, Boxes 3-5)
