Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

Coeur d'Alene (or Snchitsu'umshtsn) is a Salishan language considered endangered; as of 1999, only 2 individuals on the Coeur d'Alene Reservation in northern Idaho spoke it. Since 2014, revitalization has occurred, and use of the language has been promoted by the Coeur d'Alene Tribal Language Program along with individuals like Lawrence Nicodemus, who has taught classes and created various materials for instruction.

Colville-Okanagan (or nsyilxcən) is a Salish language with around 50 fluent first-language speakers living primarily in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. Despite its endangered status, individuals in Spokane, Washington and the Colville Indian Reservation are participating in the revitalization of Colville-Okanagan through learning it as a second language, supported through organizations like the Salish School of Spokane.

Colville-Okanagan is one of three separate dialects developed from a language termed Proto Southern Interior Salish, though divergences between the dialects (Colville, Okanagan, and Lakes) are confined to minor difference in pronunciation. Colville-Okanagan was an exclusively oral form of communication until the late 19th century, when priests and linguists began transcribing words.

Accession No. 2696-037-01: Ivy G. Doak papers, 1981Return to Top

0.46 cubic feet (1 box, including 11 sound tape reels (5") , and 1 microfilm)

Scope and Content: Tape recordings, transcript on microfilm, 1981.

Research on the Colville-Okanagan includes the comparison of modern vocabularies to the "Vocabulary in Okanagan and related dialects" collected by James Teit in 1908. Materials include lexical items taken from both James Teit's 1908 word list and a version of the British Columbia Provincial Museum Word List produced at the University of Montana Linguistics Laboratory.

During the two months Ivy Doak spent on the Colville Reservation, she elicited and recorded materials necessary for the completion of her proposed thesis on dialect variation in Colville-Okanagan. Informants included two speakers from the Inchelium, Wash., area; one each from Rogers Bar and Keller, Wash.; and one originally from Penticton, B.C. These informants supplied data from three of the four major dialect areas.
