Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Carrie Rollins Potter, of Yakima, Washington, was a member of the International Order of King's Daughters and Sons, a Christian service organization founded in 1886 by Mrs. Margaret McDonald. The Order had headquarters in New York City and had branches throughout USA and Canada. The Washington State branch was organized in 1930 with three "circles" (chapters). By 1944 there were 6 circles in Washington, but only three years later the Tacoma circle disbanded, for lack of members. As of 1987 there is no longer a Washington branch, although the national organization still exists.

Mrs. Potter was an active member of the Order and was president of the Washington branch during the 1940's and early 1950's; she served as chairman of the Credentials Committee at the 1954 Convention in Vancouver, B.C. Among the charity projects which the Achsah Circle (Mrs. Potter's circle) sponsored were the building of a nursery for a Yakima family with triplets and plans to start a Home for the Aged in Yakima. Besides her service work, Mrs. Potter worked as a real estate agent in Yakima, but there are very few letters pertaining to that in this collection.
