Professor of civil engineering and chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Washington.

Robert Graham Hennes was born in Michigan in 1905. He received a B.S. degree in civil engineering in 1927 from the University of Notre Dame. In 1928, he received a M.S. degree from M.I.T. and became the senior engineering aid to the assistant engineer for the city of Detroit, a position he held until 1934. That year he came to the University of Washington (UW) as an instructor in civil engineering until 1937. Professor Hennes continued on at UW as assistant professor from 1937-1941, associate professor from 1941-1947, and professor from 1947-1973. Dr. Hennes then became a professor emeritus of Civil Engineering. Hennes served on various university, state and national groups, most notably as chairman of the Division of Economic Studies for the Highway Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences, chairman of the Washington State Council for Highway Research, and chairman of the University of Washington Transportation Research Group. Hennes was also a prolific writer and co-authored the textbook "Transportation Engineering."
