Historical NoteReturn to Top

John Creighton (1834-1884) was born near Dundee, Scotland, immigrated to the United States, and settled in La Porte, Indiana with his parents in 1845. In 1858, he crossed the plains to California, as a wagon master in government employ. He was sent to Ft. Vancouver, Washington in 1859, and was put in charge of Lt. John Mullan's supply train, during the building of the Mullan Road that ran from Walla Walla to Ft. Benton.

In 1864, he began a freighting business in eastern Oregon and Idaho, and later moved to Elko, Nevada. In 1868, he married Mary J. McCully of Salem, Oregon. The couple then moved to eastern Oregon where they sent up a ranch and raised stock.

Creighton's father-in-law, David McCully, came to Oregon from Iowa in 1852, and became a part owner of a general store in Salem. David McCully invested in some of Creighton's enterprises.
