Historical NoteReturn to Top
Fan Kuan was one of the leading figures of Northern Song (960-1127) landscape art, and his "Travellers among Mountains and Streams" is one of the greatest Chinese paintings. His work introduced the principle of sanfen gefa--the three-division method in which foreground, middleground, and background occupy distinct spheres.
Guo Xi was Scholar of Arts at the Hanlin Painting Academy, where he was prolific as both a painter and theorist. Many of his works are lost because they were painted directly on the sides of buildings."Early Spring" (1072) fuses multiple perspectives in a representation of the ideal landscape. His treatise "Linquan gaozhi" (1117) defended objectivity and verisimilitude against the rise of subjectivism in the work of Mi Fei and others.
