Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

The town of Port Angeles was founded in 1862, and incorporated the Clallam County seat in 1890. The town's name is taken from Puerto de Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles - the name with which Spanish navigators christened the harbor in 1791. In 1862, US President Lincoln designated Port Angeles as a United States Government Military Lighthouse Reservation, making Port Angeles the nation's second federally planned city after Washington, D.C. In 1890, the US Board of Trade officially named Port Angeles the "Second National City."

The US Pacific Fleet conducted summer maneuvers in the Port Angeles harbor from 1895 to the mid-1930s, an annual occurrence that was highly anticipated by Port Angeles residents. In 1925, a US Coast Guard Office and Section Base was opened in Port Angeles for the purpose of operating small patrol vessels in the area.

The first airplane arrived in Port Angeles in 1919, and regular passenger flights between Port Angeles and Seattle were established in 1931. In 1934, the Works Progress Administration began development of an airport in Port Angeles, which after World War II became the Clallam County Municipal Landing Field. In 1951 it was renamed the William R. Fairchild International Airport.
