Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1868, Frederick W. Merigold was an early non-native settler in the town of Kalispell, Montana. He first arrived in Montana in 1891, and he purchased a 160 plot of public land near Kalispell in 1893. While living in Kalispell, Merigold worked first as a cashier at the Globe National bank before entering the clothing business as an independent hatter and men's furnisher. After that, Merigold worked as a fire insurance agent until his death. He was married twice, first to Anna Merigold who died in August 1910 and then to Lynne S. Merigold. He also had two children, Mary "March" Merigold and Florence Merigold. Apparent in his writings, Merigold enjoyed fishing in the creeks, rivers, and lakes in the area around Kalispell. Merigold died on December 27, 1930 in Spokane, Washington. He is buried at Conrad Memorial Cemetery in Kalispell, Montana.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The Merigold collection contains correspondence, legal documents, letterhead, greeting card, certificates, and other ephemera. Included in this is a 14-page letter from F. W. Merigold to 'My Dear Father and Brothers" which details a trip by horseback in western Montana. In addition, the original deed to Merigold's homestead in the Flathead River Valley is present in the collection. While the majority of the materials housed in the collection directly relate to Merigold, some of the materials have no clear link other than the fact that they are related to early settlement in Kalispell, Montana.
