Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Department of Sociology at the University of Washington was established in 1917 and awarded its first doctorate in 1932. The earliest sociology course at the university was offered in 1898 in the Department of Political and Social Science. It was taught by Professor J. Allen Smith, the sole member of the department. During the 1905-1906 school year, the Department of Political and Social Science was expanded, and three more courses in sociology were offered. Professor Walter G. Beech joined the faculty in 1911-1912, and course offerings were increased to six. Professor Beech served as the first head of the new Department of Sociologybetween 1917 and 1918. Succeeding executive officers and chairmen were: William F. Ogburn (1918), Howard Woolston, (1919-1929), Roderick Duncan McKenzie (1929-1932), Jesse F. Steiner (1933-1947), George Lundberg (1947-1955), Robert E.L. Faris (1955-1966), S. Frank Miyamoto (1967-1971), Otto N. Larsen (1971-1972), Herbert L. Costner (1973-1975, 1989-1992), Richard M. Emerson (1976-1978), Frederick L. Campbell (1979-1981, 1984-1988), Clarence C. Shrag (1982-1983), Edgar Borgatta (1993), Karen Cook (1994-1995), Charles Hirschman (1997-1998 ), and Robert Crutchfield (2000-2002).

The history of the sociology department has been characterized by intellectual innovation. Under the influence of George Lundberg, it became one of the first American sociology departments to develop a vision of sociology as a scientific discipline. As a consequence, the graduate curriculum placed particular emphasis on general theory and quantitative methodology. Faculty conducted research in three principal areas: the discovery of new empirical facts, the imputation of causal mechanisms, and the rigorous testing of general theories. Faculty have also served as presidents of the American Sociological Association and been elected members of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Research has been carried out both within the department and under the auspices of interdisciplinary centers. The Washington Public Opinion Laboratory, established jointly by the University of Washington and Washington State University in 1947 but run entirely by the University of Washington from 1950 on, was intended to act as a "demoscope," that is, an "instrument for observing people by sampling." The laboratory conducted basic scientific research, civic research on current problems for social action, methodological research to improve polling processes, and the training of research personnel in M.A. and Ph.D. degree programs. Professor Stuart Dodd directed the laboratory until 1961.

In 1961 the Washington Public Opinion Laboratory became the Institute for Sociological Research, and Professor Otto N. Larsen was appointed director. The institute was organized to develop activities that stimulated and integrated basic inquiry, research training, and professional service, with efforts to bring students into close working relationship with senior scholars in all phases of the research process. The Institute For Sociological Research continued until approximately 1974.
