Historical NoteReturn to Top

John “Pete” Hammond, was born March 13, 1936 in Pulaski, Virginia, and died on December 29, 2008. Married to Shirley D. Hammond for 49 years, Pete and Shirley raised three children. After graduating from Houghton College, he earned a master’s degree from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary. In 1966, he joined InterVarsity/USA as an Area Director in the southeastern United States where he advocated for multiethnic ministry. During his time at InterVarsity, he worked as the director of Evangelism, the director of InterVarsity’s Ministry in Daily Life; a ministry dedicated to helping men and women discover their “ministry” roles in broader marketplace settings. He spent 41 years with InterVarsity, completing his tenure in August of 2007 as a vice-president-at large. His contribution to marketplace-faith initiatives was enhanced by a number of publications, including: "Word in Life Study Bible" and "The Marketplace Annotated Bibliography: A Christian Guide to Books on Work, Business, & Vocation." Just before Pete died in December of 2008, he donated his collection of books and resources exploring Christian faith and work to Seattle Pacific University.
