Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Linguist Alice Taff’s work specializes in indigenous languages in Alaska, especially in the Unangam Tunuu (Aleut) language. Unangam Tunuu is indigenous to the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands of Alaska and forms a branch of the Eskimo-Aleut family. Taff received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities from the University of Louisville in 1968, her Master of Arts in Teaching in Elementary Education from the University of Louisville in the Teacher Corps in 1972, and her Master of Arts (1992) and her Ph.D. (1999) in Linguistics from the University of Washington. Her Ph.D. work focused on the research conducted for her thesis, “Phonetics and Phonology of Unangan (Eastern Aleut) Intonation."
Beginning in 2007, Taff researched and taught Alaskan Native Languages at the University of Alaska Southeast. She has also worked as a researcher, as a consulting linguist for schools and tribal organizations, and as a teacher and professor for students ranging in age from elementary school to college. Taff served as the President of the Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas from 2015 to 2016, as the Co-Director of the Endangered Language Fund’s Healing through Language Initiative, and has been a member of the Tlingit Clan Conference organizing committee, the Linguistic Society of American Committee on Endangered Language Preservation, and the Anvik Historical Society.

Scope and Content: Tape-recorded linguistic research, transcriptions, and translations. These include elicited sentences and short texts from speakers of Unangan (Eastern Aleut) and Unangas (Western Aleut). The recordings were made in Saint George Island, Saint Paul Island, and Atka, Alaska in 1996 and 1997.

Scope and Content: Audio and video recordings of Alice Taff’s linguistic research on the Unangam Tunuu (Aleut) language for her two-year project titled the “Aleut Conversation Corpus.” The CDs, DVDs, and miniDVs contain approximately 52 hours of digital audio and video recordings of spontaneous conversations among 60 to 100 fluent speakers of Unangam Tunuu in the cities of Anchorage, St. Paul, St. George, Unalaska, and Atka in Alaska and in Seattle, Washington. Ten percent of the recordings also include time-aligned Unangam Tunuu transcriptions and English translations. The 55 miniDVs contain master recordings of the video and audio. The 56 DVDs contain video and audio that have been transferred from the miniDVs. The 78 CDs contain only audio of master recordings of all of the conversations included on the DVDs, but are on CD in order to facilitate transcription. Also included are papers of a sample master recording log, sample transcriptions, and Taff’s deposit form regarding copies of this same material located at the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) of the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. This body of research in this accession was funded by the ELAR and not by the Jacobs Research Fund.
