Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Dr. Clarence Austin (C.A.) Smith was born Jan 24, 1861 in Derby, Connecticut. He was a graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (now Columbia University) and interned at Bellevue Hospital. He began his Seattle practice in 1889, just in time for the Great Seattle Fire. His office was destroyed in the fire and he and Dr. James Eagleson set up office in a tent. He served as Seattle Health Officer 1897-1899, presiding over the city's health at a time of rapid population growth. He was one of the founders of the King County Medical Library, edited the northwest medical journal "Northwest Medicine" and found a "study club" for Seattle physicians which met for 21 years (1908-1929). He died Sep 10, 1953, in Seattle, Washington.
