Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Dr. Frank G. Everett was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1907. He graduated from the University of Vienna Medical School in 1932 and received a Dental License from the University of Vienna Dental School two years later. In the late 1930s, Everett and his wife, Leonie Lea Everett left Austria for America. They visited a number of cities in the United States and, by 1939, had arrived and decided to stay in Portland, Oregon. Here, Dr. Everett continued his education, receiving a D.M.D. from North Pacific College in 1941 and a Master of Medical Science from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1948. He served on the faculties of both the Dental and Medical Schools from l939 continuously up to his passing in l976; at the time of his death he held the rank of Professor Emeritus in the Department of Periodontology.

Dr. Everett began his contributions to research, literature and dentistry early in his career. He wrote more than 60 papers for national and international dental and medical journals, served as co-author of four editions of Orban's Periodontics, and contributed to four other texts. He was a distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Periodontology, recipient of the Orban Memorial Award from Loyola University (Chicago), honorary member in Verein Osterreichischer Zahnarzte (Vienna), and Guest Speaker of the Main Address at the Sesquicentennial Celebration for the University of Vienna Dental School in l97l on which occasion he was named "Outstanding Alumnus and Teacher" and had his portrait hung alongside the other "Greats of the Vienna Group" (Bernhard Gottlieb, Balint Orban, Harry Sicher, Joseph Peter Weinmann).

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Frank G. Everett papers house research and scholarly output of Dr. Frank Everett. The collection dates from 1951 to 1985, with the bulk of the material dating from 1951 to 1975. The papers in Series I include reprints of some of Everett's articles, an edited typescript of Periodontics (by B. Orban), assorted theses that Everett likely used for reference, directories for many of the slides in Series II, an incomplete run of the U.S. Army's "Regional Dental Activity" newsletter, a series of bibliographic note cards, and what appears to be the original card catalog for the Frank Everett Dental Library, once housed in the OHSU School of Dentistry building. These papers and slides were found among those books in 2013 when the library was disbanded and the historical documents and rare books became part of OHSU's Historical Collections & Archives.

The slides in Series II contain a wide assortment of image material. The majority of the slides depict x-rays of patients and frequently include the patient's name and date information; this sort of material is restricted due to privacy issues. It is likely that most of the slides were part of Everett's research, but very little documentation accompanied them. A section of the slides are marked as coming from a lecture, while the rest either note the malady depicted in the slide's image or are unmarked. The tissue slides, with the exception of box 1, are unlabeled, with each slide offering a small blood or other tissue sample, yet revealing very little about the origination of the material.

All in all, this collection offers a small glimpse into Dr. Everett's research and may be expanded upon with future additions. The material is largely focused on gingivitis, in various forms, and other dental maladies. Given the restricted nature of much of the material, it will likely prove most helpful to other dedicated health professionals who are doing research in a similar area.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged into two series: "Series I: Papers" and "Series II: Slides." Series I is arranged alphabetically, whereas Series II is arranged in a manner that best fits the physical materials and retains the original order.

Acquisition Information

The materials in the collection were transferred from the Everett dental library when the library was disbanded prior to the Dental School's relocation to the waterfront campus. Little to no documentation is available regarding these records.

Processing Note

Effort was taken to retain a somewhat original order to the slides during processing, however, since the documentation is so limited, actual original order was unknown. Slides have been kept in the order in which they were found within each original box.

Related Materials

Books transferred from the former Frank G. Everett Library in the OHSU School of Dentistry can be found by searching for the "Dr. Frank G. Everett Historical Collection" in the OHSU library catalog.
