Historical NoteReturn to Top

This research is based on re-examining the work on the Reverend Bernard Hubbard. Known as “the Glacier Priest”, Reverend Bernard Hubbard was the former Head of the Department of Geology at the University of Santa Clara, California where he specialized in geological research in Alaska and the Arctic. Later in his life, he shifted his focus to an anthropological study and documentation of the people and lifeways of the Arctic. Hubbard spent considerable time in 1937 and 1938 documenting the Iñupiat and Yup'ik peoples, particularly the Iñupiat of King Island. He produced extensive still photographic and cinematic documentation of King Islander life, totaling 11,000 stills and 40,000 feet of movie film (not included in this collection).

Researcher, Deanna M. Kingston who is of King Island Inupiaq descent, visited Inupiat elders and showed them Hubbard’s film documentation of Inupiat King Island dances with the intent of being provided with contextual information on the dances and for King Island elders to identify their relatives featured in the film. A table of contents for the audio cassettes and video tapes are included in the collection. These contents consist of: audio and video tapes used for the Hubbard Oral History Project, video tapes documenting dance practices in King Island, and audio tapes of two elders singing songs composed in Siberia and telling stories about the people of King Island.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

10 two-hour videos, 21 one-hour audiotapes, and over 500 pages of transcriptions of King Island Inupiat elders’ recollections of Inupiat songs and dances. These materials were produced by researcher Deanna M. Kingston between June 14 and July 21, 1995 as part of the Bernard Hubbard oral history project, along with her own research project that centers the culture, narratives, and customs of the Iñupiat.
