Historical NoteReturn to Top

Dr. Day was a Presbyterian missionary teacher in China and India. He was born in American Fork, Utah, and spent his childhood in San Anselmo, California. He was educated at Hamilton College, New York, and San Francisco Theological Seminary. In 1915 he went to China, first to the Nanking Language School, then to Ningpo for evangelistic work, and then as a teacher at Hangchow College. Except for furloughs, he remand with Hangchow College to 1943. He spent seven months in a concentration camp, and returned on the Gripsholm. He taught at San Francisco Theological Seminary, and Centre College, Danville, Kentucky. In 1947 he went to Lahore, India (now Pakistan) to teach at Forman Christian College, and a year later returned to Hangchow College, later University, serving to 1951. He then returned to America.

The collection includes incoming and outgoing correspondence, including letters from Ethelwyn (Dolly) Day, and the Day children, two manuscripts of Peasant Cults in India and Indian Interlude. The collection also includes diaries covering 1914-1965, as well as photographs of his time at Forman Christian College in Lahore, India (now Pakistan). Miscellaneous materials contains passport photographs of the family, a travel permit, liner ticket, immunization forms, menus from M.S. Gripsholm, and a notebook, "Meditations of T. F. Day, 1935." [Note: a previous finding aid lists a manuscript with holographic annotations of, Career in Cathay, however it is currently not located as part of the collection.]
