Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Donald Clair Hawthorne was born on January 23, 1926. He earned his B.A. (1950), M.S. (1953), and Ph.D. (1955) degrees in Microbiology at the University of Washington and was awarded two postdoctoral fellowship at California Institute of Technology (1955-1956) and Laboratorie de Genetique Physiologique, du C. N. R. S, (1957-1958) in Gif-sur-Yvette, France. Professor Hawthorne joined the faculty in the Department of Genetics at the University of Washington in 1959. He worked towards significant advances in yeast genetics in that era, including nonsense suppression, mating type control, and galactose regulation. He was awarded professor emeritus status in 1985 and continued to his faculy work until his death on March 19, 2003.
