Lorenzo Adolph Richards (1904-1993) was born to Calvin Willard and Louisa Madsen Richards in Fielding, Utah. He graduated from Utah State University with his B.S. (1926) and M.A. (1927). He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University (1931). Richards was an instructor and professor at various institutions throughout his career. He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture as chief physicist until 1966 when he formed his own company, Lark Instruments. He served in various other capacities and received many awards for his advancements in soil science.
