Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Lavinia Jones Emmert was born to Anthony Kennedy and Eva (Gephart) Jones on November 19, 1880 in Dunlap, Iowa. She married Melvin J. Emmert on December 14, 1910 in Omaha, Nebraska and had two children. Beulah Harriet was born in Haugen, Montana on April 28, 1913 and died in Baltimore, Maryland on January 27, 1915. Melvin Jones Emmert, Jr. was born in Haugen, Montana on October 20, 1915 and died in Warm Springs, Montana on May 23, 1978.
Lavinia Emmert was appointed the first Postmaster at Haugen, Montana, in 1911 and served until 1915 when her husband succeeded her. Melvin Emmert died May 29, 1934 in Missoula, Montana. Lavinia Emmert died Oct. 10, 1970 in Missoula, Montana.

This collection includes Lavinia and Melvin Emmert's post office documents, a biography, a news clipping and photos. The photos are generally unidentified, but some are probably family photos; others are of The University of Montana campus.

This series includes correspondence from the Post Office Department to both Lavinia and Melvin Emmert regarding their commissions as Postmasters; Lavinia Emmert's original commission document and a brief biography written by the donor, Frank Downing. Also included is a newspaper clipping detailing the experience of A.K. Jones, Lavinia Emmert's father, during his imprisonment in Andersonville Prison during the Civil War.
