The bulk of this collection consists of both alphabetical office files and chronological files from the administrations of Deans Malcom Sillars (1974-1981) and Norman Council (1981-1991).

Historical NoteReturn to Top
The College of Humanities was formed in 1970 when the College of Letters and Science was divided into the three separate colleges of humanities, science, and social and behavioral science. During the period covered by this collection, the College's constituent departments and institutes were the American West Center; the Departments of Communications, English, History, Languages and Literature, Linguistics, and Philosophy; the Middle East Center; and the University Writing Program. Alfred A. Cave-originally Dean for Humanities in the College of Letters and Science-served as the first dean of the College of Humanities from 1970-1973. Malcolm O. Sillars became the dean in 1974 and served in that position until 1981. Norman Council was the dean of the college from 1981 until 1991. Notable developments in the College of Humanities during this period include the creation of the Humanities Center in 1988 as an interdepartmental institute for the purpose of fostering humanities reasearch, education, and community outreach; the development of an undergraduate curriculum and appropriate courses for the Liberal Education department; and the evolving use of personal desktop computers in both humanities research and instruction.

The bulk of the Administrative Office Files consist of correspondence, memoranda, minutes, reports, and syllabi from the administrations of Malcolm O. Sillars (1974-1981) and Norman Council (1981-1991) pertaining to their directorial oversight of the College of Humanities' constituent departments and institutes. Only two files contain records from the administration of Dean Alfred A. Cave.
The Chronolocical Files-dating July 1974 to June 1982-consist of 2.25 linear feet of correspondence and memoranda from Deans Malcolm O. Sillars and Norman Council which document their administration of College of Humanities as well as communication with colleagues and organizations both within and outside of the University of Utah.
