Historical NoteReturn to Top

Washington County received its first County Extension Agent in 1917. Washington County is located in northwest Oregon, west of Multnomah County and the City of Portland. The Tualatin Valley comprises the bulk of the county and provides fertile farmland for agriculture. A large part of the county has become suburban since the 1980s.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Washington County (Or.) Extension Service Records consist of materials generated and assembled by the Washington County Extension Office. The bulk of the collection consists of annual reports for 1918 through 1991. These reports document Extension Service educational and outreach programs in Washington County, including number of participants, as well as farming and agricultural production in the county. Many of the reports from the 1920s-1950s include original b/w photographs. The records also include bylaws, correspondence, flyers, meeting minutes, newsletters, newspaper clippings, photographs, plans of work, and publications. The minutes reflect meetings of the Washington County Extension staff, the Washington County Extension Advisory Council, and the Washington County USDA War Board. Reports pertaining to long-range planning in Washington County, soil surveys, farm income data, and the Dairy-McKay Hydrologic Area are also included in the collection. Plans of work and monthly narrative reports prepared by Washington County Extension Agents document educational and outreach programs in agriculture, foods and nutrition, home economics, and 4-H.

The photographs depict groups of youth attending 4-H Summer School on the Oregon State campus from the 1920s through 2002 as well as the Washington County Extension Office building in the 1970s and 1980s.
