Paul Gordon Lauren is a nationally and internationally recognized writer, teacher, and lecturer on human rights, diplomacy, and international relations. He is a Regents Professor at the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana. This collection includes drafts and research from many of his books and articles, transcripts from his public addresses, class lecture notes, teaching materials, Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center materials, and correspondence with Mike and Maureen Mansfield.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Paul Gordon Lauren was born in Seattle, Washington on February 17, 1946. In 1965, he worked as a teacher for the East Harlem Protestant Parish and was actively involved in the civil rights movement in New York City. He received a B.A. in history and political science from Washington State University in 1968. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in history and political science from Stanford University in 1968 and 1973 respectively. Lauren joined the faculty of the history department at the University of Montana in Missoula in 1974.

Lauren became the University of Montana’s first Regents Professor in 1991. He acted as the first director of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center and held the position from 1985 to 1991. During that time, he started a personal and professional relationship with Mike and Maureen Mansfield. He also held the title of Mansfield Professor of Ethics and Public Affairs. Lauren received numerous awards during his career at the University of Montana including: the Distinguished Scholar Award, the Distinguished Service to International Education Award, the Outstanding Advisor to Students Award, the Robert T. Pantzer Award, and the Most Inspirational Teacher Award. He also taught at various other universities, either as a visiting professor, visiting lecturer, or visiting scholar, including Stanford University, Massey University, University of Helsinki, University of Oslo, Pepperdine University, and the American Heritage Association. Lauren has also been recognized as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, a Peace Fellow, a Senior Fulbright Specialist, a Senior Fulbright Scholar, and a Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellow. He also served as a Distinguished Lecturer for the U.S. Department of State.

Dr. Lauren published numerous books and articles on human rights, diplomacy, and international relations throughout his career. He focused mainly on topics involving the United States and European nations (particularly France and Germany), but also wrote and lectured on Japan and China. Many of his works are nationally and internationally acclaimed, including a Pulitzer Prize nomination for his book, The Evolution of International Human Rights: Visions Seen. A celebrated lecturer, Paul Lauren delivers public addresses on international human rights and diplomacy topics throughout the United States and the world. These addresses include an invited lecture at the United Nations International Conference on Racism in 1990 and in 2007 he was invited to speak at the Nobel Peace Institute in Oslo, Norway.

Paul Lauren continues to live and work in Missoula, Montana.

This collection contains materials relating to Paul Gordon Lauren’s teaching, speaking, and writing. There are various drafts and research materials for his books and articles. It also includes transcripts, research, and supplemental materials for his various public lectures and university classes. His work with the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center at the University of Montana is represented through the availability of reports, program plans, and correspondence. There are also materials from conferences hosted by the Mansfield Center including recordings of presentations (video and audio) and publicity materials. Awards and honors he received throughout his career and materials relating to his professorship at the University of Montana comprise a large portion of the collection. Photographs of events he attended, awards he received, and his interaction with Mike and Maureen Mansfield are present throughout the collection. Finally, there is a small selection of personal materials including eulogies he delivered and correspondence with Mike and Maureen Mansfield.

This collection was donated by the creator, Paul Gordon Lauren, to the University of Montana Archives and Special Collections with several accessions in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2020 and 2022.

Small additions to this collection are expected.

Processing Note

The creator’s original order was maintained wherever possible, most folders retain their original titles. Series determinations followed categories set forth by the creator. Folders within series were arranged in either alphabetical or chronological order. Duplicate items were removed and two student rosters with grades and social security numbers were also removed from the collection. Materials not originally housed in folders came to Archives and Special Collections in labeled binders, during processing these materials were removed from the binders and placed in folders with corresponding labels. Oversized posters from Mansfield Conferences are in an oversized folder, OS 43, while a single framed poster (OS 44) is in storage with other art objects.

The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library also maintains copies of Paul Lauren’s books, including: Power and Prejudice: The Politics of Diplomacy of Racial Discrimination, Diplomats and Bureaucrats: The First Institutional Responses to Twentieth-Century Diplomacy in France and Germany, China Hands’ Legacy: Ethics and Diplomacy, and Force and Statecraft: Diplomatic Challenges of our Time. The library also holds recordings of several lectures given by Lauren. Archives and Special Collections at the Mansfield Library holds the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center Records (RG 71); Paul Lauren was the founding director of the Mansfield Center and his collection contains many items related to its founding and early operation. Materials in this collection also relate to Paul Lauren's relationship with Mike and Maureen Mansfield; the Mike Mansfield Papers (Mss 065) are also available at Archives and Special Collections.

This subseries contains black and white photographs of individuals and events surrounding the University of Montana's Mansfield Conference held May 19-21, 1991. Among the images are photographs of Mike and Maureen Mansfield standing in front of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center, the Mansfields standing in front of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library, and conference presenters including U. S. Senator Clairborne Pell, Columbia University Professor Carol Gluck, President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency Kensuke Yanagiya, and prominent Japanese politician Takako Doi. Also included are images of the crowd that attended the conference at the Adams Center, University of Montana President George Dennison, and Mansfield Center Director Paul Gordon Lauren. This conference was the last time Mike and Maureen Mansfield were at the University of Montana. The photographs were taken by University of Montana photographer Howard Skaggs.
