Biographical NoteReturn to Top

University administrator and professor of Library and Information Science, University of Washington; and author.

Margaret Chisholm was born on July 25, 1921 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota. She earned three degrees from the University of Washington (B.A. 1951, M.Libr. 1958, Ph.D. 1966). Dr. Chisholm returned to the University of Washington as a professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) from 1975-1992, and also served as director of the GSLIS from 1981-1992. When she returned in 1975, Chisholm was also appointed as the University of Washington's first woman vice president, serving as VP of University Relations and Development.

Chisholm also served the library profession in numerous leadership positions, including: chair, American Library Association (ALA) U.S./Mexico Libraries Liaison Sub-Committee, International Relations Committee (1989-1991); chair, Reference Information Development Committee of the White House Conference on Library and Information Services (1990); member of the steering committee of the Governor's (WA) Conference on Library and Information Science (1990); and president of the ALA (1987-1988). She was also Trustee-at-Large, Board of Trustees, National Association of Public Television Stations (1987- ). Dr. Chisholm died on November 21, 1999 at the age of 78.
