Biographical NoteReturn to Top
John Geddes Randall was born in Marshall, Michigan, on January 19, 1873. He was the fourth child in a family of five born to William T. and Sarah Geddes Randall. In 1876, the Randalls moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan, and by 1880, they had moved to Beloit, Wisconsin, where Randall attended public school. He graduated from Beloit Academy and went onto earn an M.A. from Beloit College. He studied medicine at Hahneman Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, and was an intern at Hahneman Hospital. He also took special work at Northwestern Medical College and completed post graduate work in New York, New York. From 1898, Randall lived and worked in Monroe, Wisconsin.
In 1905, Randall moved to Missoula, Montana, where he established a practice and soon became an active member of the community. He was involved in the Presbyterian Church, and such organizations as the Knights of Pythias and the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was also the president of both the Utsin Medical Fraternity and the Western Montana Medical Society. Randall served on the Missoula County High School Board of Trustees from 1931 until 1937 and was Chairman for two of these years. He was also an avid hunter and outdoorsman. Randall married Nellie T. Haller in Burlingame, Kansas, in June, 1911. Their children were Charlotte and Joann. He died on August 15, 1940.

The collection includes a diary for a 1908 trip John Randall took in Montana, in addition to photographs of hunting and the outdoors. Also represented in the collection are documents related to Randall's career as a physician, including a title abstract for his Missoula, Montana, medical practice located at 214 N. Higgins Ave. and correspondence concerning a physician's examination and the establishment of a practice, 1905-1927.

The series includes incoming correspondence for John Randall from two associates, William A. Glasgow and Ernest Wright, both of Missoula, Montana. The letters largely concern a physician's examination Randall took in order to practice medicine in Montana, and the establishment of his Missoula practice. There is also one letter written by John Randall, as a member of the Green County Medical Society in Monroe, Wisconsin.

Series II: Journal , 1908Return to Top
This series contains a journal Randall kept during a trip he made in the Flathead region, including his visits to Swan Lake and Yellow Bay on Flathead Lake. He describes outdoors activities such as horseback riding, fishing, and hunting. The journal is available in original and transcript form.

The series contains records concerning Randall's acquisition of his medical practice at 214 North Higgins Avenue in Missoula, Montana, from William A. Glasgow, including receipts, a legal statement, and title abstract for the property. The series also contains two stock certificates, one from the Martina Mining Company, Montana, 1916, and one from the Missoula Amusement Company, 1919.

The series contains thirty photographs and negatives, dates unknown. The photographs include images of hunting, camping, packhorses, and scenery. Other photographs were taken of people and activities in a residential area, probably in Missoula, Montana.
