Historical NoteReturn to Top

John Thayer Casey was born in New London, Connecticut in 1931. He started painting in oils at the age of twelve and received formal art training at the University of Oregon. He received his Bachelors of Arts in drawing and painting in 1958. In 1962, Casey graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts in painting from the California College of Arts and Crafts. He taught studio art, history and theory at Western Oregon State College (now Western Oregon University) from 1965 until his retirement in 1988.

Casey's work has been exhibited at the Denver Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Portland Art Museum, and other smaller galleries. In addition to teaching, Casey operated White Crow Graphics, a design company servicing businesses in the Willamette Valley. After retiring from Western Oregon State College, Casey continued to teach courses through the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology.

Casey passed away in Salem, Oregon in May 2011.

The John Thayer Casey papers include correspondence, course planning materials from the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, photographs of works, and business papers. Casey's correspondence includes letters, written both to and from other influential members of the Northwest art scene. Casey maintained both professional and personal relationships with Carl Hall, Jack Eyerly, Jim Shull, Carole Smith and former student Rick Bartow among others. In addition to an extensive collection of photographs of his artworks the John Thayer Casey papers include material describing techniques used in the creation of several pieces.
