Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection contextualizes Navajo beadwork on belts, hatbands, baskets, necklaces, and other items, with fieldnotes about the art as explained by traders, Navajo consultants, and Navajo bead workers themselves. The collection contains images, recorded audio and transcribed interviews from beadwork artists across Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah that Ellen Moore connected with at Navajo tribal fairs, trading posts, and powwows. The featured beadwork artists include: Sandra Black, Lorraine Brock, Mollie Duwyenie, Marina Elliot, Betty Slim Hatalie, Gerri Hatathli, Virginia Hatch, Emma Henderson, Phillip Jim, Doreen Johnson, Shirley Kills-In-Sight, Flora Lee, Juanita and Uhl Martinez, Cindy Fowler Penn, Grace Ration, Bessie Roberts, Betty Russell, Joanne Lewis Tsinijinnie, Harrison Tsosie, Wendy Weston, Patti Whitethorne, and two beadworkers who prefer to remain anonymous.

Through her fieldwork, Moore highlights how Navajo beadwork is based on an aggregate of beliefs, categories, and symbols that are individually interpreted and transposed into beaded designs. Most designs are generated from close observation of light in the natural world, then structured according to either Navajo tradition or the newer spirituality of the Native American Church. For many beadworkers, creating designs taps into deeply embedded beliefs so that beaded objects reflect their thoughts and prayers, their aesthetic sensibilities, their sense of being Navajo, and their attention to light and its properties.

Ethnographic research for this project on the Navajo Reservation was done with permission of the Historic Preservation Office of the Navajo Nation, permit no. C9317-E.
