Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Frederick Elmer Bolton was born May 9, 1866 and grew up on a small frontier farm near Toham in southern Wisconsin. Bolton became interested in education early in his life and worked as a teacher, principle or superintendent for various two room schools, high schools, and normal schools in Wisconsin. Later he served as dean of the College of Education at the University of Iowa. In 1912 Bolton moved to Seattle, where he worked as dean of the College of Education at the University of Washington.

Bolton authored or co-authored a number of books including The Beginning Superintendentand History of Education in WashingtonDuring his career, Bolton was active in the Progressive Movement. He was a strong advocate for the development of junior colleges in Washington State and played a key role in the organization and success of the Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools. Bolton died on March 10, 1963 in Seattle, Washington.

The collection contains images related to public schools, collected by Frederick Bolton as part of his research. Several of the images appear in Bolton's book, The Beginning Superintendent . Several photographs show minority high school students. Also contained is a series featuring images of school buses.
