The Mary Armstrong Milligan papers (1957-2000) contain journal excerpts, correspondence, a handbook, and scrapbooks dealing with Milligan's involvement in river rafting in the Western United States. Milligan (b.1909) was a participant in the South Cottonwood Ward organization (SOCOTWA). SOCOTWA is a semi-private river outfitter that began after World War II. Two Salt Lake City-based organizations, Moki Mac and SOCOTWA, began buying war surplus and conducting youth groups down the Colorado River. Most of the collection deals with Milligan's experiences on the river trips.
