Historical NoteReturn to Top

"The temperance movement migrated to the Pacific Northwest around the 1870s. In 1874, the “Great Crusade” came west, and Portland women formed the Women’s Temperance Prayer League. Portland women prayed and sang, in spite of insults, attacks, and even arrest. Despite their enthusiasm, that initial temperance movement ended in July.

However, the Oregon temperance movement was reborn in 1880 as the local branch of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. In 1881, the first local group was formed in Portland, and in 1883, the Oregon State WCTU was officially created when Frances Willard arrived in Portland to organize it.

There were thirty-two Unions in Oregon by 1886, and eighty-three by 1891. Membership reached approximately two thousand members, and the Portland area had six chapters."
