Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Edward Boos was born in Kentucky on April 1, 1877. His family moved to Helena, Montana, while he was in grade school. He attended the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana in 1896 but did not complete a degree. In that same year Boos began working as a freelance correspondent for several newspapers in the Missoula area. During the summer of 1897 Boos accompanied the U.S. Army 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps on its experimental overland trip from Fort Missoula to St. Louis, Missouri. The company traversed 1,900 miles over difficult terrain and through taxing weather conditions in an attempt to prove that bicycles could replace horses for troop transport and reconnaissance. Boos submitted accounts of the expedition as they traveled. His accounts were prepared for the Daily Missoulian, but some were also published by newspapers along the route and a few were subsequently reprinted by national and international newspapers.

After the Bicycle Corps expedition Boos continued to produce photographs for western Montana newspapers. Sometime around 1900 he purchased his own camera and began photographing people and landscapes in the Missoula and Flathead valleys. Boos was particularly interested in recording life among the Kootenai, Salish and Pend'Oreille families of the Flathead Reservation as the 20th century began. He conducted a series of photographic portrait sessions at various sites across the reservation, mostly completed between spring and fall of 1905. According to a 1935 newspaper story, many of these portraits were developed at night under a canvas cover so the photographer could share the portraits directly with his subjects. Throughout the time period Boos continued to photograph landscapes and events in the Missoula and Flathead Lake areas.

In 1906 Boos accepted an advertising manager position with the Missoula Mercantile Company (MMS) and married Annie Hammond, cousin of MMC co-owner Andrew Hammond. Edward Boos ended his newspaper work but continued to periodically take photographs. Boos remained with the MMC for the next thirty-one years. In September 1935 an "Indian Jubilee" celebration was held in St. Ignatius, Montana. This event was the first public exhibition and print sale of Boos' Flathead Reservation portraits. Edward H. Boos died of a heart attack on September 26, 1937.

This collection mainly consists of glass plate negatives, film negatives and prints by Edward H. Boos,a photographer in Missoula, Montana, from 1897 through1907. Broadly, the photographic subjects include the Missoula, Mission, and Flathead valleys in Montana; Kootenai, Salish and Pend'Oreille families on Montana's Flathead Reservation; and Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park, all at the beginning of the 20th Century.

Some more specific photograph subjects include the Boos home, the Daly Horse Ranch (Riverside Farm / Bitterroot Stock Farm) near Hamilton, Montana, logging near Hamilton, the 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps, the Missoula Mercantile, and a Fourth of July parade in Missoula, Montana.

The majority of the images in this collection have been individually described.

Location of Originals

Images 672.001 through 672.099 are glass plate negatives and thus probable originals. Images 672.291 through 672.309 are original film negatives. All other images are photograph prints. Where noted with the letters "DPL" preceding the image number, the originals are at the Denver Public Library. Duplicate numbers that are not preceded by DPL are held in collection Mss 346 (Edward Boos Photographs) at the Mansfield Library's Archives & Special Collections.

Custodial History

These photographs remained in the possession of the Missoula Mercantile following Mr. Boos' death. Walter McLeod, a Mercantile owner, passed this group of glass plate negatives, film negatives, and photographs to his daughter who later passed them to her own daughter, Mary M. Pitch. For further explanation of overall Boos photograph custodial history, see Mss 346.

This collection of photographs was donated by Mary M. Pitch in November, 2006.

Processing Note

Glass plate negatives, film negatives, and individual photographs were rehoused in individual acid free sleeves. While five scrapbooks were maintained in existing condition, photographs from two other scrapbooks were removed for preservation. When original captions existed they were retained and sometimes augmented for clarity. When a caption clearly did not match a photograph, descriptive information was substituted.

Archives & Special Collections holds another collection of Boos photographs, organized and described as collection Mss 346. That collection was received by the Archives in 1972. At the time the 2006 donation was received, the Archivist made the decision not to physically integrate the two collections but to instead cross-reference. Images in this collection which duplicate those in Mss 346 have been noted in the guide to this collection (Mss 672) when they were identified.

The Denver Public Library Western History/Genealogy Department retains a collection of 129 glass plate negatives and four additional prints by Edward Boos. Scanned images of all prints are available on-line from the Denver Public Library web site (http://digital.denverlibrary.org/). The Montana Historical Society and the Smithsonian Institution retain some prints from negatives at the Denver Public Library Western History/Genealogy Department and Mansfield Library Archives & Special Collections.

Mansfield Library's Archives & Special Collections also holds Mss 346, another collection of Boos photographs (some of which are duplicated in this collection), and two photos titled "Indian Dancing Men" and "Pielle-A Kootenai" in mats that are signed by Boos and include small pencil drawings.
