Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Gerald Cone grew up in both Port Angeles and Seattle, graduating from Garfield High School in 1932 then University of Washington in 1936. After serving in the US Coast Guard during World War II, he opened a printing shop in Seattle called The Cone Company which he later expanded into Cone-Heiden with his brother Mort. Cone and his wife Molly are founding members of Temple Beth Am in northeast Seattle.

Scope and Content: 1 transcript of oral history interview conducted in 1996 with Jeannette Schreiber and audiocassette and transcript from interview conducted in 2007 with Emily Schaffer. Cone discusses his father's immigration to America, his childhood in the Jewish communities of Port Angeles and Seattle, his Coast Guard service during World War II, his printing business, and his community activities. Names discussed include Sol Levy, Sam Steinberg, and Sam Mosler. The 2007 interview is an addendum in which Cone recounts the history of the founding of Temple Beth Am. Names discussed include Rabbi Norman Hirsch, Rabbis Jonathan and Beth Singer, and Belle Ruth Witkin.
