Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Gay and Lesbian Community Council of Utah (GLCCU) was established in 1986. The GLCCU fostered communication between Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender groups, and law enforcement groups in Utah. GLCCU established programs involving outreach, anti-violence, AIDS awareness, and managing the Utah Pride Festival. In 1991, GLCCU established the Utah Stonewall Center. The mission of the center was to provide a safe and supportive meeting place for gays and lesbians along the Wasatch Front. The center functioned as a meeting place for support groups, workshops, and seminars, as well as an information clearinghouse. The center also included an art gallery, library, and coffee shop. In 1995, Utah Stonewall Center officially broke from the GLCCU and in 1997 closed its doors. In 1998, the center reopened under new leadership with the name, Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Utah. The center then included a cafe, lending library, meeting space, and a youth activity center. It sponsored programs including support and social groups, HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention programs, gender-based book clubs, and coming-out groups. In 2002, the Gay and Lesbian Community Center combined with Utah Pride, Inc. Then in 2005, the center became the Utah Pride Center.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Utah Pride Center records (1976-2012) contain correspondence, meeting minutes, pamphlets, brochures, newsletters, manuals, contracts, publications, financial documents, office files, administrative files, subject files, posters, and memorabilia. The largest portion of the organizational files belonged to the Utah Stonewall Center (USC). Boxes 1 through 8 contain USC's organization files, daily office files, office references, financial and committee files. The original file groups were kept intact, as much as possible. Boxes 9 through 27 contain USC's reference files. The first 3 boxes are specifically related to AIDS topics and the following 16 contain information relating to homosexual, bisexual, transsexual and gender topics and issues. The files contain collections of flyers, newsletters, journal and magazine articles, and newspaper clippings. The collection also contains files from other groups that were closely connected to the Gay and Lesbian Community Center. Many of the people involved with the community center were also involved with establishing these other organizations. Boxes 28 through 35 and box 60 contain files for Affirmation: Gay and Lesbian Mormons, American Civil Liberties Union, Gay and Lesbian Community Council of Utah, Gay and Lesbian Utah Democrats, Queer Nation and the University of Utah. In 1988 the Utah Stonewall Historical Society and Archives for Gay and Lesbian Studies were formed and later housed at USC. Ben Williams was one of the archivists and was also a member of the USC Board of Directors. Boxes 36 through 41 are the contents donated from Ben Williams' desk files. The files were left in the groupings as originally donated, as far as possible. Box 42 is a scrapbook of Salt Lake Tribune newspaper clippings regarding homosexual topics. Boxes 43 through 50 are a collection of Gay and Lesbian newspapers and newsletters from the USC archives.
