John Nielsen was born 9 June 1858 in Bukkehave, Maribo Ampt, Lolland, Denmark. His parents were converted to the LDS Church in 1855 and moved the family to Salt Lake City during the 1860s.

The John Nielsen autobiography (1858-1881) consist of a life sketch of John Nielsen (b. 1858), detailing his early life and affiliation with the LDS Church. He tells of life in Denmark, prejudices against converts to the Mormon faith, and his family's journey to the Salt Lake valley, ending with his marriage to Frances Higgins in 1881. Of particular interest are Nielsen's memories of the golden spike driven at Promontory Point and the grasshopper invasion of 1869.
