Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Seattle Arts Commission was created in 1955 as the Municipal Arts Commission. The name changed to Seattle Arts Commission in 1971. The mission of the Seattle Arts Commission is to support "the City by advocating for arts policy, creating access for equitable participation in the arts, and fostering enriching arts engagement for all residents." Throughout its history, the Arts Commission has worked to support art works, festivals, performing arts, arts education, historic preservation, landscaping, and other projects. The Arts Commission is primarily comprised of volunteer members appointed by the mayor and City Council.
