Historical NoteReturn to Top
Arthur Lawrence Bolton (August 30, 1876-August 17, 1958) studied ornithology at Stanford University under Leverett Mills Loomis and spent field time in the Farallon Islands. In 1898, he journeyed to Alaska where he searched for gold and wrote prose. He served as the Superintendant of Grounds at the University of California, Berkeley from 1902-1905. He was the Northern California representative for the State Board of Architects and a member of the California Academy of Sciences. He was also an Honorary member of the Poetry Society of England and a prolific writer of short stories and poetry. He married Mary Saylor Bolton (1879-1971) and had three children, Eleanor Saylor Bolton, Arthur, Jr., and Beatrice Mary Bolton. The family lived on La Loma Avenue, in Berkeley, California. Photographs relating to the Klondike Gold Rush. Some of the photographs were used to illustrate an account of a season of travel on the Yukon River. Many of the photographs were made by Arthur Bolton, Pillsbury, and Case.

Steamboating and Life on the Yukon in the Early Days" Alfred Page's first hand account of the 1899 season spent as a
ship cook on the Yukon River which details the social life in the towns and
camps as they emerged during the Klondike Gold Rush. Includes 20 b/w
photographs with typed captions and pencilled notations by Arthur L. Bolton.
These illustrations depict early travels on the Yukon river between 1898 and
1905.

Days?: The Songs of the Chinook and Trails of Yesterday" Arthur Lawrence Bolton's collection of 96 typed poems concerning
mining, mushing, gambling, and the harsh landscape in the Yukon during the
Klondike Gold Rush. Includes 36 b/w photographs taken by Bolton while working
in the Yukon between 1898 and 1905.

Bolton Eleven letters between A.L. Bolton and F.W. Morrison, Bolton's
partner in the mining venture at Dominion Creek in the Yukon Territory,
concerning the financial state of their joint venture. Bolton returned to
California in 1905 after seven years of working at Dominion Creek to continue
his interest in collecting botanical specimens, while Morrison continued to run
the partnership.

Fifty-six b/w prints and photostats found loose in a blank scrapbook with about half taken by Arthur L. Bolton between 1898 and 1905, to which he added pencilled captions on the back of each print. Many of the remaining images were taken by professional photographers working in the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush. Includes two photostats of Bolton's mining licenses.

| 2/14 | Scrapbook Scrapbook with two b/w prints of A.L. Bolton at Lake LaBarge
adhered to the cover, in addition to three Japanese characters. The scrapbook
contained 56 loose b/w prints and photostats and the pages do not contain
captions or any indication of a particular order. Many of these images also
appear as illustrations in Bolton's original manuscript, "Them Was The Days?:
The Songs of the Chinook and Trails of Yesterday."
