Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

Stereographs or stereocards consist of two nearly identical photographs or photomechanical prints, paired to produce the illusion of a single three-dimensional image, when viewed through a stereoscope. Stereograph images are produced by a special camera that has two lenses. Stereoscopic imaging is a technique that creates the illusion of depth using two 2-D images placed side by side; one in front of the left eye and one in front of the right eye of the viewer. Both offset 2-D images are then combined in the brain to give the perception of 3-D depth. Three strategies have been used to produce this effect: the viewer wears eyeglasses to combine separate images from two offset sources, the viewer wears eyeglasses to filter offset images from a single source separated to each eye, or the light source splits the images directionally into the viewer's eyes without glasses.
