Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Captain Charles Handley was born in England in 1811. He married Sarah Burton, who was born in England in 1817. Charles Handley was in the Royal Navy in Tasmania from 1834 to 1846. He left the service and started his own shipping and cargo business. In 1850, he and his family came to Oregon. He became the head surveyor in the original survey of the Oregon Territory. He was a farmer who lived in Dundee and McMinnville. He and his wife had eight children, including Thomas Burton Handley, a well-known resident of Tillamook.

Handley, 1 volume, 1869-1871; a typescript biographical play, "Fierce Feathers"; correspondence concerning Handley family history, 1982; genealogical information, tracing the history of the family from James Burton and Jemima Champion to the descendants of Captain Charles Handley; Handley family obituary clippings and ephemera; wills of Henry and Jemima Cooper; correspondence regarding Handley family genealogy, 1975-1984; and family history of the Robisons, who were related to the Handleys through marriage. Also included is a map of property lots in Lane County.
