Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Luther Weedin was born John Luther Weedin on November 22, 1872 in Otterville, Missouri. The Weedin family moved to Seattle when Luther Weedin was an infant. Following his schooling, Luther Weedin worked in logging on Whidby Island in his twenties. In 1897 he worked as a packer in Skagway, Alaska as part of the Alaska gold rush. On his return he was pursuaded to run for sheriff of Island County. Luther Weedin was the sheriff of Island County, Washington, 1897-1901, serving two terms and then returned to his logging buisiness. In 1907 Luther married Athaleen Harrington. Weedin then served as assessor and treasurer for the county. He was in Island County politics until 1911.The Weedin's son Harrington was born in 1912. In 1913 with proceeds from his timber operation Luther Weedin bought the Island County Abstract Business. He directed it successfully before selling it in 1921. Throughout this time Luther remained involved in politics, serving as an elector, food comissioner, member of the National Defense Comittee and finally chairman of the state Electoral College in 1920. In 1921 he was appointed U.S. Immigration Commissioner in Seattle in 1921 and served until 1933. Subsequently, he ran a title insurance business in Coupeville on Whidbey Island and also attempted a dairy business.
