Albert Richard Wetjen (1900-1948) was born in London, England. He became a writer and editor who was known for his sea stories and novels.

He went to sea at age 14, came to Canada in 1920, and to Oregon in 1921, stopping to work in Harrisburg. He moved to Salem in 1923 and worked as editor of Oregon Magazine for three years. He later moved to Portland, then to San Francisco.

The collection (1923-1945) contains correspondence regarding the condition of writing in the Pacific Northwest, and also manuscripts of stories.

Most of the letters refer to the (awful) condition of writing and publishing in the Pacific Northwest. Correspondence includes letters by Wetjen to Allen Jayne, Hattie Howard, Ada Hedges, and Edythe Wetjen.

Incoming correspondents include Thomas Beer, T. S. Stribling, Norman Reilly Raine, and Louis Adamic.

The manuscripts are all short pieces, and one essay on James Stevens. Copies of published pieces are also included.
