Harold Drebin (1916-2008) was born in Seattle and attended Seward School and Broadway High School. He majored in forestry at the University of Washington, but before graduating joined the United States Army as a volunteer in 1940. In the Army, he served in Alaska as a surveyor, and then in Europe after D-Day, including during the capture of Paris. When the war ended, he was in Salzburg, Austria. After the war, Drebin started a long career in sales, married his wife Priscilla, and had four children.

Rudolf Berge was a nineteen year old student in Zittau, Germany near the border with Czechoslovakia at the time he wrote the letters to Harold Drebin. He was killed while on the Russian front fighting for the German army.
