Historical NoteReturn to Top

Karl Vernon King was born on 27 October 1901, the son of Samuel Andrew and Maynetta Bagley King. He attended the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and George Washington University before serving an LDS mission in Germany. He joined his father's law firm in 1930 and became a Salt Lake City judge in 1944. In the late 1940s-1950s, he was involved in a massive importation of foreign sheepherders into the United States due to the decline of the wool industry. King was married to Imogene Wilhelmsen in 1926. He died on 5 June 1969.

Samuel A. King was born on 9 January 1868 to William and Josephine Henry King. He graduated from the Michigan Law School in 1896. He and his brother, Senator William H. King, were partners in a law firm from 1906-1916. He served an LDS mission to Great Britain and then married Maynetta Bagley in 1892. He married LoRen Watson after Maynetta's death.

William H. King was born on 3 June 1868 to William and Josephine Henry King. He received his law degree from the University of Michigan and served in various political positions in Utah for over fifty years. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1916-1940.

Creighton King was the brother of Karl Vernon King. He died suddenly in 1930.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Karl Vernon King papers (1899-1960) include the papers of two generations of a Utah family of lawyers and politicians. The collection is divided into four parts. The first contains materials from and about William Henry King. It includes correspondence, news articles, speeches, and pamphlets. The second section contains Samuel Andrew King's files, which include personal and business correspondence and his legal papers. His correspondence with his brother and business associates illustrates the Kings' involvement in mining, irrigation, and the oil industry. The third section contains some materials regarding Creighton King. The final and largest part of the collection are the files of Karl V. King. The majority of these materials concern his work as an immigration lawyer and his efforts to import Basque sheepherders in the 1940s-1950s.

Legal Case Files, United Mine Workers
During the 1920s, the law firm of King and Schudder were retained by the United Mine Workers. Samuel King represented the union in various legal matters in Utah and Wyoming. His most challenging tasks resulted from the 1922 strike of coal mines in Carbon County, Utah. King was called to defend more than twenty strikers accused of murder and to prepare the union's complaint filed before the U.S. Coal Commission in 1923.
