Historical NoteReturn to Top

Edward W. Clyde (1917-1991) was raised in Utah on his father's farm. He received an undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University in 1939. In 1942, he received a law degree from the University of Utah. In 1941, he married Betha Jensen and together they raised four children: Susan, Carolyn, Thomas, and Steven. In 1951 he started the Clyde, Meecham and Pratt law firm in Salt Lake City. Presently, the firm is known as Clyde, Snow, Sessions, and Swenson. Clyde quickly became an authority on natural resource laws. He litigated many water rights cases, and water reclamation issues. He was a driving force behind the Central Utah Project. Clyde has served the University of Utah's College of Law as a lecturer, a member of the Board of Regents, and president of the Institutional Council. For his service to the University and the State of Utah, he received many honors including an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Of his service to the University of Utah, Sterling M. McMurrin wrote in a letter dated 9 June 1981, "It is quite inconceivable to me that any Regent of this or any other university has served the institution more faithfully or more effectively. The good that you have done for the University of Utah during the many years that you have served as Regent and Chairman of the Institutional Council is quite beyond measure." (See Box 14). His honors went beyond his service to the University of Utah. Notably, Clyde was selected as the Utah State Bar's "Lawyer of the Year" for 1985. Edward W. Clyde died of cancer in 1991.
