Historical NoteReturn to Top

Isaac Algazi (1882-1964) was a singer, teacher, writer, and composer from Izmir, Turkey. As a child, he performed in the Maftirim Choir where his father was hazzan--the person who leads a Jewish congregation in songful prayer. In 1923, he was appointed hazzan of his own synagogue in Galata (Istanbul) where he also taught music. In the 1930s he moved to Montevideo (Uruguay) where he continued to sing and participate in Sephardi congregation activities until his death in 1964. Much of his music was never recorded, but has been maintained through oral tradition.
