Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Mr. Newberger was born in San Francisco in 1888. He came to Seattle where his uncles, the Frauenthal Brothers, had a dry goods store. He was President of the Seattle First National Bank and retired in 1949.

Tape recorded interview conducted by Karyl Winn and Jeannette Schreiber on 22 Mar 1971 and covering the period 1860-1930.

Mr. Newberger discusses his family, their real estate affairs, and his early career wtih Jacob Furth in the Puget Sound National Bank beginning in 1900. He also mentions others with whom he was associated in Seattle and the effects of such events as the Great Seattle Fire and the Alaska Gold Rush on their business ventures. He discusses the early Seattle Jewish community including the erection and dedication in 1892 (or 1893) of Temple de Hirsch, its subsequent relocations and Rabbis. On the second side of the cassette, Mr. Newberger gives the details of the merger of Puget Sound National Bank that began in 1910 and resulted in what we now know as Seattle First National Bank.
