Historical NoteReturn to Top

Accent on Understanding was established for and dedicated to promoting global understanding through international exchanges that improve educational communities, opportunities, support systems, and resources, worldwide. It was a non-profit, 501(c)(3)-designated Washington state based international educator exchange organization that existed from 1987 to 2006. Accent on Understanding formed from the yearly Storytell International trips to the Soviet Union, where teachers accompanied master storyteller Michale Gabriel to create peace and friendship through the exchange of stories and other folklore. The 1987 trip inspired several participants to create an organization that would formalize these pursuits. Accent on Understanding carried out educational exchanges between educators of Washington state and the nations of the former Soviet Union including Uzbekistan and Ukraine. Student exchanges began in 1990. The first delegation traveled to the Soviet Union in 1990.
