Historical NoteReturn to Top
Arden R. Gaufin (1911-1997) was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 25 December 1911. He studied Botany and Zoology at the University of Utah, graduating in 1935. In 1937 he received an M.S. in Entomology from the University of Utah. Gaufin received a Ph.D. in Limnology and Fisheries Biology from Iowa State University in 1951, then returned to the University of Utah as an Assistant Professor. He remained at the University until 1977, when he retired as a Professor of Biology. In the 1960s and 1970s he was also affiliated with the University of Montana, where he taught in the field of environmental biology and conducted studies of various bodies of water. Gaufin specialized in the taxonomy and ecology of the Stoneflies of the Intermountain Region. His work on the effect of water conditions on aquatic insects led to participation in various projects on water quality and pollution. He was associated with the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Water District from 1954 to 1964 and was involved with the mosquito abatement program. He also served on the Public Health Service National Advisory Council, which was instumental in establishing water pollution control standards. Gaufin died in Salt Lake City on 8 January 1997.
