Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Jay Ellis Ransom was born in 1914. He is a 1935 graduate of the University of Washington, where from 1936-1941 he did graduate work in psychology and anthropology. As a student of Professor Melville Jacobs, Ransom pursued linguistic research in Duwamish Salish, Fox Island Aleut and Flathead Salish. From 1936-1940 he worked as a teacher and community worker in Alaska for the U.S. Office of Indian Affairs. He accompanied a 1954 expedition to the Aleutian Islands as a linguist and anthropologist. After teaching science and mathematics for many years in Nevada, California, and Australia, Ransom became a free-lance magazine photojournalist, a technical writer and editor in the missile and aerospace industry, and a newspaper photojournalist and editor.

Dirks, and an Aleut Dictionary compiled by Knut Bergsland.
