Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Vernon Carstensen was a professor of history at the University of Washington, and an influential historian with an intellectual interest in agricultural and Pacific Northwest histories. Carstensen was born in 1907 in Cherokee County, Iowa. In 1928, he received his bachelor of arts degree from Iowa State Teachers College, followed by a Ph.D. in 1936 from the University of Iowa. He served as U.S. Army Quartermaster from 1943-1944. Carstensen’s teaching career began at Central Washington University, followed by several years at the University of Wisconsin. It was during this time that he co-authored the two-volume University of Wisconsin: A History(1949).
Carstensen began teaching at the University of Washington in 1964. He taught undergraduate and graduate courses on history and chaired the committee that developed the African-American Studies program in 1969. He was heavily involved in the Faculty Senate at the University of Washington, serving as chair in 1971. He retired from the University of Washington in 1975.
He was actively involved in the professional community of historians. Carstensen served as president of the Agricultural History Association in 1958. Additionally, he was a founding member of the Western History Association in 1961 and served as the organization’s president in 1981. His skills were employed as editor of the Agricultural Historyand the Pacific Northwest Quarterly, as well as on the Board of Editors of the Journal of American History. He was a frequent presenter at professional conferences.
Carstensen produced numerous articles, and was the author or coauthor of three books. The University of Wisconsin honors his legacy with the Alice Smith-Vernon Carstensen Fellowship. He died in 1992.

This accession consists of materials relating to two major areas: 1) student evaluation of teaching at the University of Washington, and 2) history of the Bar in the state of Washington and some of its counties.

Scope and Content: This accession consists of reports written by Vernon Carstensen during his time as U.S. Army Quartermaster Depot in Seattle from 1943-1944. Reports are numbered 1-6, 8 (7 missing).
Report no. 1 is a history of the depot from 1896 to 1940. No. 2 is a report on civilian personnel, 1939-1943. No. 3 is on Quartermaster procurement, 1941-1943 (manufacturing contracts). No. 4 is on procurement for Seattle Depot, 1941-1943 (buying fuel for Alaska and Ninth Service Command). No. 5 is on expansion and reorganization of Seattle Depot, 1940-1941. No. 6 is on supplying Alaska. No. 7 is missing but is on supplying petroleum to Alaska. No. 8 is on reclaiming 50-gallon oil drums.

Scope and Content: This accession consists of Washington territorial period letters from 1854-1883 (microfilm and xerox copies).
It also consists of copies from Carstensen's microfilm of letters from the Washington Territory Government and Clarence Bagley collection of "miscellaneous pioneer letters," which he selected and had copied by the UW Libraries in 1950.

Scope and Content: This accession consists of the "Diary of Joseph Warren Wood, 1847-1853" and "The Heroes of Battle Rock..." edited by Orvil Dodge.
These 2 typescript copies of manuscripts were given to Carstensen for future editing for publication. He does not recall the sources of the originals nor whether any publication resulted at the hands of someone else. For the Wood diary (about 300 pages) of his travel to California and the gold rush experience, see the enclosed letter from A. B. Wood to Muriel [Wood], 28 Mar 1936. The Dodge account (13 pages) is of an Indian attack at Port Orford, 1851, 13 pages, typescript.
