Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Jane Richardson Hanks was born in 1908 in Berkeley, California. The daughter of a University of California Classics professor (Leon Josiah Richardson), Jane pursued a Ph.D. in Anthropology before beginning a lifetime of field work. With her husband Lucien Hanks, Jane first studied Blackfoot Indians in Canada; they then began a long term project focusing on the Bang Chan (Bang Cheng) village and other communities in Northern Thailand, which began in the early 1950s and extended through the 1970s.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Jane Richardson Hanks collection consists of Jane and Lucien Hanks' original notes, transcripts, manuscript drafts and audiovisual materials from their field research, primarily focusing on work in Thailand spanning the 1950s-1970s. Some field notes, interviews and photographs originating with other anthropologists are also present, especially in the Bang Chan materials. The collection documents Thai rituals and ceremonies (marriage, ordination and cremation), agriculture, diet, family, gender and group dynamics, and other topics.

Films in the collection mainly document daily life, rituals, performances and festivals in Thai cities and villages where the Hanks researched. Audio recordings, some not produced by the Hanks, feature mostly Thai and Native American music.

approximately 2.5 cubic feet (5 boxes)
33 film reels (9450'): sound, color, 16mm
20 audiotape reels (15,600'), 1/4"
19 audiocassettes
Arrangement: Items are numbered 1-26, 28-72, skipping number 27

Scope and Content: Most films show subjects of the Hanks' research in Thailand, first in the early 1950s and then in 1969. Listed topics include music and dance performances; festivals such as New Year's; ceremonies such as weddings, funerals and ordination; rice harvesting, boats, and other scenes of village life. A few were filmed in Bangkok in 1953-1955. Approximately ten films feature footage from the Hanks' study of Bang Chan (Bang Chang), also from 1953-1955.

There are also four German films in the collection, labeled "J. T. Band" or "J.T. Fassung". It appears that Jane and/or Lucien Hanks may have translated or narrated the English version of these films. Their scripts, along with English translations, are included, as well as an audio recording of the narrative soundtracks.

Other audio recordings mainly feature Thai and Native American music. Thai classical and folk music are represented, as well as radio play and readings of Thai literature. One Bang Chan-related tape is included, and two of the cassette tapes are commercially produced. American Indian recordings feature Comanche, Taos, San Carlos and Mescalero Apache, Mohave, Zuni, Navajo, Hopi, and Sioux, many of which are credited to Laura C. Boulton as the recorder. Audio from Burma and Bali is also present, along with two lectures, from Bennington College (1977) and SUNY Albany (1971).
